GeneSight Testing at Life Psychiatry: Personalized Medication Plans Based on Your DNA
Life Psychiatry offers GeneSight DNA testing to help match you with the right psychiatric medication for depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more
A smarter way to choose mental health medications
For too long, selecting psychiatric medications has felt like guesswork: start one, wait weeks, hope for improvement, stop due to side effects, then try another. At Life Psychiatry, we believe there is a better path. With GeneSight® testing, we can use your DNA to guide treatment, reduce trial and error, help avoid adverse reactions, and speed up your path to feeling better.

What is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes how your genes may affect your response to psychiatric medications.
– It examines clinically relevant genetic variants in multiple genes that influence how your body metabolizes and responds to psychotropic drugs.
– The test includes a panel that covers more than 50 commonly used psychiatric medications, including those for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and related conditions.
– Results come in a clear, color-coded report:
– Green (“Use as directed”) means no known gene-drug issues
– Yellow (“Moderate gene-drug interaction”) may require dose adjustment or closer monitoring
– Red (“Significant gene-drug interaction”) indicates a higher risk of side effects or reduced effectiveness
This information helps your psychiatrist select medications that are more likely to help and less likely to cause problems, creating a treatment plan that is based on your unique genetic profile rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
How GeneSight works at Life Psychiatry
Easy sample collection
During your visit, we collect a quick and painless cheek swab.
Lab analysis
The sample is sent to the GeneSight laboratory, where your DNA is analyzed for known genetic variants that may influence how you respond to psychiatric medications.
Report & interpretation
Within a few days, we receive a color-coded pharmacogenomic report. We review the results with you and explain how your genetics may affect certain medications and doses.
Informed treatment plan
Using your report and a comprehensive clinical assessment, we create a treatment plan that may help you reach stability faster with fewer side effects.
It is important to note that GeneSight does not diagnose mental health conditions. It serves as an additional tool that supports your clinician’s expertise and helps guide personalized treatment decisions.
Ready to find the medications that fit your DNA?
Who may benefit from GeneSight testing
GeneSight can be especially helpful if you:
– Have tried multiple psychiatric medications without success
– Have experienced significant or unexpected side effects
– Are starting a new medication and want a more informed approach
– Want to shorten the time it takes to find the right medication
– Are an older adult or have liver concerns that may affect medication metabolism
Everyone’s body processes medications differently. GeneSight can help explain why two people with the same diagnosis might respond very differently to the same drug.
Research has shown that patients whose treatment is guided by GeneSight results have higher remission and response rates compared to those treated through traditional trial and error.
Conditions and medications addressed
Because GeneSight covers a broad psychotropic medication panel, it is useful for patients managing:
– Major depressive disorder (MDD)
– Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
– Panic disorder
– Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
– Bipolar disorder
– ADHD and attention-deficit disorder
– Other mood and anxiety spectrum disorders
It provides insights on many antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and ADHD medications.
Why choose GeneSight at Life Psychiatry
– Evidence-based: GeneSight’s psychotropic test is supported by multiple peer-reviewed studies and clinical trials.
– Comprehensive multi-gene approach: The test uses several genes, not just one, to provide a clearer picture of how you might respond to medication.
– Clinically useful: The results offer guidance that helps clinicians make informed choices rather than relying on guesswork.
– Patient-centered: We review and interpret your results together, helping you understand your options and play an active role in your care.
– Faster, safer progress: By using genetic insights, we can often reduce the number of failed medication trials, shorten the time to effective treatment, and minimize side effects.
Offering GeneSight testing at Life Psychiatry reflects our dedication to modern, science-based, precision psychiatry.
Cost, billing, and accessibility
Here is how GeneSight billing works:
– Life Psychiatry does not bill insurance for GeneSight testing. You will receive a bill directly from Myriad Genetics, the company that provides GeneSight.
– Typical out-of-pocket cost: More than 98% of patients pay $330 or less for the test.
– If the cost is estimated to be higher, GeneSight will contact you before running the test.
– For patients with Medicare Part B or Medicaid, out-of-pocket costs may be $0, depending on coverage.
– Financial assistance and payment plans are available, including interest-free options for qualifying patients.
– Patients without insurance or those who prefer not to bill insurance can choose the $330 self-pay option, which is often the simplest and most predictable route.
Patients who use GeneSight testing often save money in the long run by avoiding ineffective or poorly tolerated medications.
Limitations and important notes
– GeneSight is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a full psychiatric evaluation.
– It does not cover every psychiatric medication.
– Genetics are one part of the picture. Other factors such as age, diet, other medications, and health conditions also affect how you respond to treatment.
– The test cannot guarantee a specific medication will work, but it provides valuable guidance to support more informed treatment planning.
– Always consult your clinician before changing or stopping any medication.
